What is Comfortis for Dogs & Cats?

Comfortis is the first FDA-approved, chewable beef-flavored tablet that kills fleas and prevents flea infestations on dogs and cats for a full month.
For:
Dogs & Cats (14 weeks of age or older)

Benefits:
Starts killing fleas within 30 minutes
Lasts a full month
Kills fleas before they can lay eggs
Comes in a convenient chewable, beef-flavored tablet
Spinosad, the active ingredient in Comfortis, is environmentally friendly

How it works:
Spinosad kills fleas by causing excitation of the insect's nervous system, leading to paralysis and rapid death.

Cautions:
Side effects may occur, including vomiting. If your pet is experiencing loss of appetite, lethargy, or any other difference in behavior, contact your veterinarian. The FDA has received reports of adverse reactions in dogs receiving the drug Comfortis (spinosad) concurrently with high, extra-label doses of ivermectin. Dogs receiving extra-label doses of ivermectin to treat non-responsive demodectic mange and other conditions have developed signs of ivermectin toxicity. Ivermectin is an ingredient found in heartworm preventatives such as Heartgard Plus, Heartgard, Iverhart Plus and Ivomec. In cats, the most common adverse reaction recorded in clinical trials was vomiting. Other adverse reactions were: lethargy, decreased appetite, weight loss, and diarrhea. Use with caution with concomitant extra-label use of ivermectin.

What is NexGard?
Protecting your dog from harmful fleas and ticks has never been so easy! NexGard is a brand new, revolutionary flea and tick preventative from the makers of Frontline®, the #1 choice of veterinarians. It's the first flea and tick killer of its kind because it comes in a yummy, beef-flavored soft chew that protects your dog from a flea and tick infestation for a full 30 days. That means, you don't have to worry anymore about messy topicals, or accidentally washing your dogs preventative off while bathing! Also, it can be taken alongside your dog's heartworm medication, without interruption. NexGard keeps your pet protected from adult fleas by killing them before they have a chance to lay eggs, which reduces the possibility of a flea infestation. Plus, it kills 3 types of ticks (the American dog tick, the black-legged (Deer) tick and the Lone Star tick) which decreases the risk of your pet developing a deadly tick-borne disease. NexGard requires a prescription from your veterinarian.

For: Dogs

Benefits:

• First-ever flea and tick preventative from the makers of Frontline that comes in a tasty beef-flavored chew

• No more messy topical preventatives, and no more worrying about washing off your dog's flea protection

• Safe, effective, FDA-approved, and lasts for 30 days

• Can be taken alongside heartworm medication

How it Works:
NexGard contains a brand new ingredient not used in any other flea and tick protection. Afoxolaner, the ingredient in NexGard, works by absorbing rapidly and safely into your pet's bloodstream and causes uncontrolled activity the flea's and tick's central nervous system, which causes death. Afoxolaner is slowly excreted through your pet's metabolism, which allows NexGard to continue to provide effective treatment for a full 30 days. This means amazing protection in a tasty morsel! NexGard is a prescription-only medication, so talk to your vet.

Cautions:
NexGard is for use in dogs only. The most frequently reported adverse reactions include vomiting, dry/flaky skin, diarrhea, lethargy, and lack of appetite. The safe use of NexGard in pregnant, breeding or lactating dogs has not been evaluated. Use with caution in dogs with a history of seizures.

What is Heartgard Plus?

Heartgard Plus is a real-beef chewable tablet for dogs that provides protection against heartworms, and treats and controls roundworms and hookworms. Heartgard Plus is given monthly and requires a prescription from your veterinarian.
For: Dogs (6 weeks of age or older and no weight requirement)

Benefits:
Considered the most tasty heartworm chewable tablet (beef flavor)
Effectively controls heartworms, roundworms & hookworms
Only given once a month

How it works:
Heartgard Plus contains ivermectin, a broad-spectrum antiparasitic medication used to prevent heartworms. Heartgard Plus also contains Pyrantel Pamoate, an anthelminthic, used to prevent roundworms and hookworms.

Studies have indicated that certain dogs of the herding breeds are more sensitive to the effects of ivermectin administered at elevated dose levels due to the MDR1 gene. For a full list of dog breeds that may be affected, click here.

Cautions:
Can cause sensitivities in herding dog breeds. Heartgard Plus chewable tablets should be chewed, not swallowed whole. The tablets may be broken into pieces and fed to dogs that normally swallow treats whole. Make sure that your dog eats the entire dose. It is important to give your dog Heartgard Plus every month year-round. Do not skip winter months as your dog may become infected. If you miss more than two months of dosage, please consult with your veterinarian as to whether to continue medication.
